Theme- Independence

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you." p.257-258

This is after Rochester tells Jane that he is married even after asking Jane to marry him. Jane feels hurt and lied to and is trying to leave Rochester. Although Jane has proclaimed the desire to be as free as a bird she is now making it clear that she is not a bird confined by anything. She is independent and has her own free will to decide what she does. She is proclaiming now that she is a free human being with choices that she will make on her own. she demonstrates it by her choice to leave Rochester where he is standing. This theme is similar to Matilda because Matilda goes on her own to learn and do her own things. Her family doesn't support her in what she wants to do, like read books or go to school. Both Jane and Matilda are independent and have to be to be successful.

  1. This is a very good theme. I have never watched Matilda but, I can understand what your theme is about. Jane is very independent and does not let Rochester "rule" her. She is a very successful woman.
