"A topic we should never discuss: the very name of love is an apple of discord between us." p.416

Jane uses the term "an apple of discord between us" when speaking to St. John about love. The term "an apple of discord" refers to the Golden Apple of Discord which was inscribed "for the fairest" by the goddess Eris and was thrown into a feast of the gods at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, sparking a dispute among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite that eventually led to the Trojan War. The apple of discord is used to signify the core of an argument or a small matter that could lead into a bigger problem. Jane uses the expression "an apple of discord between us" to show that her and St. John disagree on the principles of love. In Matilda the apple of discord is very much similar. Matilda's families idea of love is very different than Matilda's. Her family only cares about money and if you aren't helping make money then you don't mean anything in the family. Matilda's idea of love is much deeper than that.
