"He bullied and punished me; not two or three times in a week, nor once or twice in the day, but continually: every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel of flesh on my bones shrank when he came near." p.9

Here Jane explains her fear of her cousin and his abuse towards her. She is so afraid of him that she feels belittled whenever he's near, "every morsel of flesh on my bones shrank". Jane feels as if she doesn't belong in the family because he only treats Jane poorly, also because she is adopted. Matilda feels the same in her family. Her brother mistreats her and makes fun of her, calling her names, for being different then the rest of her family. Matilda likes to read and learn while the rest of the family likes to sit around and watch television. Matilda gets ridiculed for being different just like Jane does.
