Diction

“That a greater fool than Jane Eyre had never breathed the breath of life; that a more fantastic idiot had never surfeited herself on sweet lies, and swallowed poison as if it were nectar.” p.162-163.

Jane starts to realize her feelings for Rochester as he is getting ready to leave Thornfield. She becomes jealous when she knows he'll be around Blanche Ingram. In this quote Blanchë uses contradicting words to show Jane's complicated emotions. Jane is described as a "fantastic idiot". Jane feels dumb for her feelings for Rochester. She thinks it is stupid to have feelings for someone who she could never have a chance with. At the same time though she uses the word "fantastic" because she has never felt this way before. Rochester is the first man to come into Jane's life who doesn't mistreat her and she has never experienced the feelings she has for him before now. The choice of contradicting words further shows the complicated relationship between Rochester and Jane and also Jane's complicated internal conflicts with her emotions.
